Gaming on mobile phones is currently undergoing massive change, especially this year. For instance, games for mobile phones now offer fully immersive experiences, and with the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the korean giant has joined hands with a company called Oculus and have churned out the Samsung Gear VR which is now the first dedicated virtual reality headset for mobile. Not it is time for the Apple to play the catch up game with its iPhone as iOS users are yet to do anything related to virtual reality. Granted they have the best gaming eco system but nothing has been done in VR field.
It shall be noted that the Gear VR has been around for a while, but it is now that is entering consumer space. Oculus says that next launch cycle of Samsung will have the Gear VR finally seeing a full commercial launch. Oculus CTO John Carmack said at the month’s Game Developers Conference that, “The official formal strategy is that Oculus goes big, full consumer on Samsung’s next release cycle,” and that, “It is going to be real,” Carmack said. “There are going to be customers.”
That said, the demand for the Samsung Gear VR has been huge. The company has come up with nice schemes where on buying their smartphone, you get the gear VR for free. This has also pushed the content developers to develop content for VR.
Gaming is ofcourse the main area. After all, mobile games have been on the rise, drawing in not just casual gamers, but even core gamers as well. Even gaming companies that have published games for desktop computers have begun to make games in HTML5 in order to give players the choice to play on their Gear VRs and mobile devices. The company behind mobile gaming portal MansionCasino.com said that games now account for over 50 percent of all smartphone usage and that percentage is huge. This has drawn in tons of developers – the main demographic for the past release of the Gear VR.
Back when the Samsung Galaxy note 4 was launched, Samsung showcased something called an “Innovator’s Edition” which was targeted for early adopters more than anything else, and while its hardware was mostly complete, the Oculus software was still in development. Now that it is complete, developers and users will accept this new tech easily.
According to TechCrunch, Cormack stressed a lot of work still needs to be done before the Gear VR is called a success. TechRadar also reports that massive improvements are being made based on user experience with the previous iterations of Gear VR. The next version of the Gear VR will be released this fall and it will bring a bucketful of features and improvements over the current version.
